MTA Long Island Rail Road Main Line Corridor Improvements Project

Client: MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)
Location: Nassau and Queens Counties, New York
Project cost: $1.2 billion (estimated), $7.5 million (fee)
DMJM Harris is currently performing feasibility studies, environmental planning, and conceptual engineering studies for the development of an environmental impact statement to evaluate the addition of a third track and other improvements to the LIRR Main Line.
The LIRR Main Line is the east-west spine of the railroad’s network and is currently limited in a two track arrangement. DMJM Harris is examining a corridor 11.5 miles in length that will provide the LIRR with an increase in capacity, peak hour train service, and operational reliability and safety; the ability to recover easily from service disruptions; and the potential to offer non-peak direction service.
The project’s primary purpose is to provide additional track and operational improvements that will enable the LIRR to achieve the maximum benefits to its customers as a result of the East Side Access project, bringing LIRR service into Grand Central Terminal, while also providing future service to Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan and Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn.
