Trans-Hudson Express (THE) Tunnel

Client: New Jersey Transit (NJT)
Location: Eastern New Jersey and New York City
Project cost: $7.6 billion (estimated)
To address congestion and increase capacity for future ridership growth as part of the Access to the Region’s Core effort, NJT, partnered with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has initiated THE Tunnel project. DMJM Harris is part of a tri-venture performing preliminary engineering services for the construction of a new passenger rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York City.
The 9.2-mile project includes the addition of new double track from the Frank R. Lautenberg Station leading to the two new single track tunnels under the Hudson River. The project also includes new train storage facilities at the Kearny Rail Yard in New Jersey. A variety of construction methods will be employed to advance the project.
DMJM Harris is the management lead for facilities design for the new passenger station at 34th Street in New York City. In addition, DMJM Harris is responsible for leading the civil engineering and rail systems design efforts, and is closely involved in tunneling design, risk management, and project delivery. The project is anticipated to be opened in 2017.
