White Plains Library

Client/Owner: White Plains Library
Project location: White Plains, New York
Construction cost: $1.6 million
DMJM Harris was hired to design the replacement of the existing chiller plant with the most cost- effective alternative. The library’s main concern was that its existing cooling system would not make it through the next cooling season, which would result in Library closings. In addition, the library had insufficient funds or resources to do the project on its own.
DMJM Harris installed new electric chillers, chilled and condenser water pumps, an induced-draft cooling tower, and piping. A new wall was erected to divide the existing chiller/boiler room into two separate rooms. Although construction started at the end of January, we provided the library with cooling by the start of the cooling season, meeting a three-month construction schedule.
We also installed a refrigerant leak detection system, a ventilation fan for the chiller room and a new expansion tank. DMJM Harris implemented a combination air separator and a centrifugal type sediment removal separator was installed in the chilled water line, with two new 15-horsepower pumps to circulate the chilled water. Throughout the construction period, there were no interruptions to library activities or processes.
