Southern New Jersey Light Rail Transit System

Client: New Jersey Transit
Project location: Mercer, Burlington, and Camden Counties, New Jersey
Project cost: $804 million
DMJM Harris, in joint venture, was the general-design-assistance consultant for the 34-mile Southern New Jersey Light Rail Transit System (SNJLRTS). This Design, Build, Operate and Maintain (DBOM) project extends the reach of the extremely successful PATCO rapid transit service by providing better access to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The project has also improved intrastate mobility throughout New Jersey and stimulated development of employment centers and other destinations in southern New Jersey.
With 20 stations, three park-and-ride facilities, 17 bridges, and 50 grade crossings along the Delaware River corridor, the light rail system connects riders to the larger transportation networks of New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, PATCO, and SEPTA. The system has created more than 4,000 construction and construction-related jobs, and 200 permanent jobs. Using advanced, articulated, clean-burning-diesel light-rail vehicles, the SNJLRTS provides new light-rail transit service from Trenton to Camden along the Delaware River, running roughly parallel to Route 130. The SNJLRTS serves an estimated 16,000 riders per day and has enhanced the region’s economic development.
