In-City Generation Program

Client: New York Power Authority (NYPA)
Project location: New York, New York
Project cost: $500 million
DMJM Harris performed Program and Construction Management for the In-City Generation Program. NYPA undertook the installation of eleven LM6000 gas turbine generators on seven locations throughout New York City and Long Island. The objective of this project was to provide much needed support to the power grid in the area where diminishing capacity margins had raised the threat of power outages.
A typical power plant would likely take between two to three years to construct; however, we finished this project in less than18 months. The project was completed under an extremely aggressive schedule for engineering, procurement and construction, and successfully provided the additional generation capacity required for the summer peak loads. During the record-setting heat wave of August, the generators ran in support of the grid and helped avert power outages.
