New York Police Department

Client/Owner: New York City Police Department

Project location: New York, New York

Construction cost: $2 million

DMJM Harris provided a feasibility study, and design, estimating and construction management services for this chiller replacement project that also included an upgrade of the Headquarters Emergency Backup Power System. We performed a complete site survey of mechanical and electrical systems for the 500,000 square feet, 15-story facility. In addition, we analyzed the replacement of a 2,000-ton chilled water plant with high efficiency electric centrifugal chillers and a hybrid plant fueled by both electricity and Con Edison district steam.

The analysis resulted in the recommendation to install two new 550-ton high efficiency electric centrifugal chillers. This provided not only an efficient and cost effective backup, but allowed a rotation of chillers which will extend the life of the new and existing chillers.

Additionally, an emergency generator was installed at the roof which will give the facility space cooling ability during a power failure, a critical improvement to a building which houses operations which are vital to the City of New York. This required considerable electrical distribution work to “tie-in” pumps, cooling towers and air handlers.

DMJM Harris provided a detailed design and bid package, handled all bid phase services and equipment procurement, and provided on-site construction management to ensure that the Project’s aggressive schedule was met.
