Client: City of Philadelphia
Project location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Project cost: $81 million
DMJM Harris completed final design for the reconstruction of the interchange linking I-95 to the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). This $80-million project provides access to a new international terminal at PHL, the fastest growing airport in the nation. In addition to its responsibilities for all design, permitting, and construction documents for 3.5 miles of new access ramps and six bridges, DMJM Harris also coordinated utility relocations; handled right-of-way acquisitions; coordinated mass transit service; and developed highway lighting, highway and airport signing, and landscaping.
The design and construction of the interchanges was fast-tracked to coincide with the delayed April 2002 opening of the international terminal. Design was completed in ten months, and construction was completed over a period of 18 months. Several innovative procedures were used to meet this aggressive schedule. Most notable among these was separating the construction into three contract packages: foundations, structural steel procurement and general construction.
