Rowland Unified School District Comprehensive Energy Savings Project

Client/Owner: Rowland Unified School District
Project location: Rowland Heights, California
Construction cost: $15.9 million
DMJM Harris provided the Rowland Unified School District with a turnkey Energy Savings Performance Contract Project to install new lighting, HVAC, controls and cogeneration systems. This cogeneration project was a first for the District and included the installation of natural gas-fired microturbines.
The project work involved running additional natural gas service and the installation of a gas booster pump to provide adequate pressure for the microturbine. Additionally, DMJM Harris provided all required electric distribution and upgrades to the facility’s electrical system to allow for the use of the complete electrical output of the microturbine.
Through the development of an energy savings performance contract, we were able to secure financing for these upgrades, while saving years in their implementation by using California Code 42.17 for procurement. In addition to the upgrades, the district’s energy costs have been lowered significantly. The result is that the improved facilities have enhanced the ability of the teachers to educate and of the children to learn.
