Port of Houston, Bayport Container Terminal Wharf Design

Client: Port of Houston
Project location: Port of Houston, Texas
Project cost: $40 million
The Port of Houston Authority (PHA) awarded JWD Group the design of 1,660 feet of wharf for PHA’s new Bayport container terminal complex. The wharf was designed to accommodate cranes with a 211-foot outreach that can offload a 22-wide container ship, and provides for a water depth of 53 feet at the face of the wharf to accommodate future dredging programs. The new container wharf is constructed on 36-inch drilled shafts varying in length from 67 to 131 feet, and the wharf deck is 135 feet wide to accommodate the 100-foot-gauge container cranes and to provide for the circulation of unloading equipment on the wharf. Dredging to accommodate the wharf construction included approximately 1.7 million cubic yards, and slope protection using rockfill and articulated concrete mats was required.
