Port Ivory New Intermodal Container Transfer Facility

Client: Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ)
Project location: Staten Island, New York
Project cost: $70 million
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey selected DMJM Harris to provide complete engineering services for the design of a new Intermodal Container Transfer Facility at Port Ivory adjacent to the Howland Hook Marine Terminal. Four sets of twin-tracks, as well as one set of triple tracks will be constructed, totaling over 14,000 feet of working track. This new “container-on-flat-car” facility will make use of rubber tire gantry cranes, and mobile side-loading container handlers for the transfer of freight containers between railcars and yard tractors and chassis serving the adjacent Howland Hook Marine Terminal. The project’s design also incorporates capacity to transfer NYC municipal solid waste containers from barge to railcars. The project will involve phased construction of the tracks.
DMJM Harris is the lead consultant for the project and is providing the bulk of the engineering services including civil, geotechnical, structural, traffic and mechanical. Subconsultants include Nigel Nixon and Partners for pavement, Maguire Group for utilities and permits, and Hirani Engineering and Land Surveying for survey, as well as PACO and BBE for estimating services.
