Transit/Rail

DMJM Harris provides the full range of development and implementation services for light rail, heavy rail, bus and bus rapid transit, commuter rail, freight and intermodal facilities. Ranked #1 in transportation in the United States by Engineering News-Record, AECOM is involved in the world’s foremost transportation projects, including new transit systems from New York to Dallas, Chicago and Seattle, plus international transit projects in major European and Asian cities.

Our clients are the world’s foremost transportation agencies, transit operators and railroad companies. DMJM Harris offers the full range of transit/rail design services in an integrated package—seamless from the owner’s point of view. And we go further, offering analytical and strategic expertise for every stage of implementation. Our multidisciplinary approach yields greater value, reliability and sustainability.

Program management

We offer program management services that include planning, design, procurement, construction, start-up, operations and maintenance. Our program management credits include Boston’s Silver Line bus rapid transit system, Los Angeles’ Metrolink commuter rail and the Alameda Corridor linking the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with transcontinental rail lines.

Project delivery and financing

By teaming with a constructor, we can compress schedules, lower costs, reduce claims, and streamline coordination with a single point of contact. We also offer other delivery options, such as design, build, operate and maintain; and turnkey, as well as help create public-private partnerships to tap non-traditional revenues.

Planning and project development

Projects start with ideas. We listen to our clients’ ideas and carry their vision forward in major investment studies, alternatives evaluation, ridership forecasts, environmental impact assessments and reports, and operations studies. We also consult and offer financial analysis to advance decision-making.

Systems engineering

We offer 20 categories of systems services, including electric power, catenary, control centers, signaling and train control, emergency management, fare collection, mechanical-electrical, quality assurance/quality control and more.

Facilities design

Our design capabilities extend to stations, parking, tracks, rights-of-way, grade crossings, maintenance and layover facilities, seismic retrofit and more. We also excel at an array of security-related services, including vulnerability analysis, threat detection, intrusion warning and video surveillance.

Stations and transportation centers

Whatever the context, we integrate stations into the community fabric using our expertise in transportation planning, concept design, traffic management, architecture, urban planning and site planning. We also coordinate operations and maximize joint development opportunities.

Railroad and intermodal facilities

We meet the design and evaluation service needs for every railroad structure—from tracks and bridges to tunnels and facilities. We also provide estimating, construction management and inspection services. For intermodal facilities, we leverage wide-ranging experience serving major international port and harbor operators.

Shops and yards

We can provide both design and construction management services for rolling stock maintenance shops and railcar storage yards, as well as bus maintenance depots. Our facilities expertise includes the design of civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well architectural design, with an emphasis on sustainability.

Construction management

Our expertise includes project controls, cost control, scheduling, inspection, claims and changes, start-up and testing. For new projects or rehabilitation programs, we offer the experience to complete construction efficiently.

Operations and maintenance

Having worked side by side with transit agencies and providers, we have efficiently run and maintained transit systems of all types and sizes. Our operations and maintenance staff include former transit agency personnel, who can provide direct hands-on skills and experience in helping service providers optimize their operations, management, and service delivery.

Public-private partnerships (P3) and development of transportation infrastructure

DMJM Harris offers a wide range of expertise to developers and agencies to plan and execute projects within, above or adjacent to transportation facilities. Our in-depth rail, bus, and ferry expertise qualifies DMJM Harris to advance even the most technically challenging transit-oriented development projects. Our capabilities also include identifying sources of public funding and private financing in the P3 arena.
